We have a long history in Southwest Montana.

We’re proud of our roots and we’re committed to providing excellent eye care to the communities where we work and live.

Medical Eye Specialists, which opened in 1963, was the first ophthalmology office in Bozeman. As we’ve grown over the years, we’ve maintained our passion for our practice and our established Montana roots. Each of our ophthalmologists, optometrists and technicians has strong ties to the area. We all love the outdoor lifestyle and close, family-town feel of life here in Bozeman.

Meet Our Doctors

As your local eye care experts, our top priority is your care. That means we’re dedicated to building relationships and spending time with our patients, making sure you get the information you need and ensuring that you’re comfortable with the care you’re being given. We don’t rush through appointments and we don’t overschedule. We spend quality time with each of our patients so we can get to know you, your eyes and your eye care needs.

Medical Eye Specialists is a physician-owned practice. We believe this helps keep us patient-focused, family oriented and proud to be local.

Joe Sheehan, M.D., M.S.

Cornea, LASIK & Cataract Surgeon

Dr. Sheehan became interested in studying the eyes by observing the profound impact vision can have on a person’s life, and the ability an ophthalmologist has to improve someone’s quality of life through medical and surgical options. Every spring, Dr. Sheehan spreads this knowledge and takes his life-changing abilities beyond Montana’s borders, participating in service work in Guatemala. He’s involved in a yearly cataract surgery and medical trip serving a rural part of the country where he both performs surgery and teaches eye surgery to Guatemalan ophthalmologists.

Originally from Fairbanks, Alaska, Dr. Sheehan has truly made Montana his home. He loves doing just about anything outdoors, such as hiking, rafting, fishing, skiing and playing ice hockey, and he says the best part of his days are interacting with Montana patients and working alongside his incredible team who make it fun to come to work.

Callie Harberts, O.D.

Medical Optometrist

Dr. Callie Harberts is a fifth generation Montanan. Her desire to explore a career in healthcare led her to work as an optometric technician in Helena, where she enjoyed the direct patient care and the technical aspects of optometry. This, paired with a family history of a rare eye condition, led her to pursue optometry as a profession. At Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Dr. Harberts experienced a large, comprehensive clinic with a wide range of training options including direct care for post-operative cataract, glaucoma and retinal surgical patients. She also provided primary care and vision therapy to pediatric patients and assisted in the management of emergency patient care in an urgent care clinic. Her skill set expanded to include management and treatment of patients with glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration and other ocular diseases. She also provided primary eye care exams in a private practice setting with emphasis on contact lens care and fitting.

Dr. Harberts is also experienced in caring for pre- and post-surgical Cataract, Glaucoma, and LASIK & PRK patients, and ocular disease management and treatment, and she has a high proficiency in ocular disease management, post-operative care, and interpretation and performance of advanced diagnostic techniques. At Medical Eye Specialists, Dr. Harberts regularly works with post-operative patients, provides primary eye care and works with patients who require specialty contact lens fitting. Her ability to be a part of a comprehensive team and provide continuity of care is very important to her as she believes the highest quality patient care always takes a team effort.

Dr. Harberts is a member of the American and Montana Optometric Associations. She has spent many years volunteering her time as a basketball coach and volunteering her optometric services on several humanity mission trips. She currently volunteers with the Eagle Mount Ski Program and at her son’s elementary school helping local families. She and her family enjoy skiing, hiking, spending time together at the lake and traveling.

Shannon Currier, O.D., FAAO

Medical Optometrist

Dr. Currier has been interested in the eyes since she was a kid – she thought all the gadgets at the eye doctor’s office were really neat, wondering how they worked and what they were used for. Along her optometry journey, Dr. Currier has been a Spanish Interpreter at Pacific University Eye Clinics, become a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, worked as an Optometric Physician at Precision Eye Care in Dillion, MT and she’s now a Medical Optometrist here at Medical Eye Specialists.

For Dr. Currier, Montana truly is home. Having grown up in Helena and attended college in Bozeman, Dr. Currier knows her way around the Montana backcountry – hiking, backpacking, cross country skiing, traveling and rock crawling are some of her favorite hobbies. Dr. Currier also knows the people of Montana’s communities – their friendliness and willingness to help each other. It’s the same within Medical Eye Specialists, too. Dr. Currier’s favorite part about working at MedEye is the people, and she says it feels like family here; that everyone always wants the best for their patients and staff.
